REXUS BEXUS - Rocket and Balloon Experiments for University Students

Rocketeer — Thu, 16/10/2008 - 8:09am

REXUS BEXUS is a bilateral German-Swedish cooperation to offer students opportunities to fly their own experiments on sounding rockets and stratospheric balloons.

Half of the payload is reserved for German students, while the Swedish half has been made available to students from other European countries through a collaboration with ESA Education.

* REXUS experiments are launched on a unguided, spin-stabilised rocket powered by an Improved Orion Motor with 290 kg of solid propellant. It is capable of taking 40 kg of student experiment modules to an altitude of approximately 100 km. The vehicle has a length of approx. 5.6 m and a body diameter of 35.6 cm

* BEXUS experiments are lifted by a balloon with a volume of 12 000 m³ to an maximum altitude of 35 km, depending on total experiment mass (40-100 kg). The flight duration is 2-5 hours.

REXUS and BEXUS are launched from Esrange Space Center in northern Sweden. The balloon flights will take place in September 2009 and the rocket launches in March 2010.

The deadline for proposal submissions is 17 November 2008

Depends on how high you're

Rocketeer — Mon, 17/05/2010 - 9:25am

Depends on how high you're going and how much money you've got to spend. You'd probably be looking at something like a lightweight GPS unit logging NMEA data to an embedded computer and transmitting via low-power FM.

See http://www.hexoc.com/wb/pages/hab/ferret.php as an example.
